Elba is a modern compact variety bred for high yields, outstanding flavour and excellent garden performance which makes it ideal for beds, borders, raised beds and larger containers.
Plants produce long straight pods around 15cm in length, each one fine, smooth and completely stringless when picked at the right stage. The beans have a superb flavour and a tender texture that is delicious lightly steamed, boiled or sautéed. They also freeze well so you can store some of your crop for later in the year.
Elba has been selected for improved resistance to pests and disease which means plants stay healthy for longer, supporting heavier crops from early summer into autumn. Fast maturing and very productive, this variety is perfect for gardeners who want reliable results with minimal fuss. As a dwarf French bean, plants stay bushy and compact so there is no need for tall supports which makes it especially suitable for smaller gardens and allotment edges.
For best results, sow from April to July in fertile, moisture retentive soil in a sunny sheltered spot. Sow direct in rows or blocks, or start seeds in pots and transplant once seedlings are established. Keep soil evenly moist and weed free. Regular picking encourages plants to keep flowering and producing new pods right through the season, often from June to October.
